    Pop musician and songwriter Erroll Garner dies of emphysema in Los Angeles. He wrote the classic "Misty," which Ray Stevens remade as a country hit in 1975

    Big-band leader Buddy Johnson dies of a brain tumor in New York City. In 1944, his single "When My Man Comes Home" appeared on an early Billboard country chart. He also wrote the classic "Since I Fell For You," a 1976 country hit for Charlie Rich

    Elvis Presley dies in his bathroom at Graceland Mansion in Memphis. Arguably the most significant pop artist of the 20th century, the beginning and end of his career are grounded in country. He enters the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998

    Vic Ames, one-fourth of The Ames Brothers, dies in an ice-related car accident in Nashville. Prominent in the 1950s, the group had a pop hit with the 1956 release "It Only Hurts For A Little While," remade for the country charts by Margo Smith just weeks before Ames' death

    Bandleader and trumpet player Louis Prima dies in a New Orleans nursing home. He wrote the pop standard "Sunday Kind Of Love," destined to become a country hit 10 years later for Reba McEntire

    Hard-rock singer/songwriter Bon Scott dies after a night of heavy drinking in London. He sang "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and "Highway To Hell" for AC/DC, referenced in Craig Morgan's 2009 country hit "Bonfire"

    Pop vocalist Janet Vogel commits suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning in Pittsburgh. She co-wrote The Skyliners' signature song, "Since I Don't Have You," destined for a country revision by Ronnie Milsap in 1991
