    Rock vocalist Janis Joplin is found dead of a heroin overdose at the Landmark Hotel in Los Angeles. Her version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me And Bobby McGee" becomes a posthumous hit, and her "Piece Of My Heart" is later remade country by Faith Hill

    Trumpet player Louis Armstrong dies in New York. Recognized as one of jazz music's greatest figures, the raspy-voiced singer joined Jimmie Rodgers to record "Blue Yodel No. 9 (Standin' On The Corner)" in 1930

    Pop singer Gene Austin dies at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California. Hugely popular in the late 1920s, he earned major hits with 1927's "My Blue Heaven" and 1928's "Ramona." The latter was remade as a country hit in 1968 by Billy Walker
