    Pop singer Eddy Howard dies of a cerebral hemorrhage. A prolific figure during the 1940s and '50s, he made one appearance in country music's Top 10 with his 1947 recording of "Ragtime Cowboy Joe"

    Soul singer Sam Cooke is shot and killed at Los Angeles' Hacienda Motel. Two of his songs are later remade as country hits: "Bring It On Home To Me," by Mickey Gilley; and "Good Times," by Dan Seals

    Pop star Nat "King" Cole dies of lung cancer at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. He charted more than 100 singles during his career, including the original version of "Mona Lisa," remade in country by Jimmy Wakely, Moon Mullican and Willie Nelson

    Big-band leader Claude Thornhill dies of a heart attack at his home in Caldwell, New Jersey. His orchestra recorded the first hit version of "Sunday Kind Of Love," a country hit for Reba McEntire in 1988

    Pop singer Bobby Fuller dies in Los Angeles of asphyxiation, just months after scoring a hit with "I Fought The Law." The song, written by former Buddy Holly cohort Sonny Curtis, is remade in a 1978 country hit by Hank Williams Jr.

    Big-band leader Lucky Millinder dies in New York City. A mid-century jazz and R&B figure, he planted two 1944 singles--"Sweet Slumber" and "Hurry, Hurry"--on Billboard's folk charts, which ultimately became the magazine's country list

    Francis Craig dies following a heart attack in Sewanee, Tennessee. The Nashville orchestra leader wrote "Near You," the first million-seller recorded in Music City. The song is remade as a country hit by George Jones & Tammy Wynette in 1977
