    Jim Denny dies of cancer in Nashville. While serving as house manager for the Grand Ole Opry, he became an influential talent booker, and joined Webb Pierce in forming Cedarwood Publishing, one of Nashville's first music publishing ventures

    Harty Taylor, one-half of the duo Karl & Harty, dies. The duo came to prominence via Chicago radio station WLS' weekly variety show, "The National Barn Dance"

    Songwriter Stan Jones dies in Los Angeles, California. He wrote "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky," which became a hit for Vaughn Monroe and for Johnny Cash, as well as the theme song to a Gene Autry western movie

    Lyricist Johnny Burke dies in New York. Known for such standards as "Pennies From Heaven" and "Swing On A Star," he also co-wrote Erroll Garner's "Misty," which becomes a country hit for Ray Stevens in 1975

    General Douglas MacArthur dies at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He gave a speech that inspired Gene Autry to write "Old Soldiers Never Die" in 1951. MacArthur will also be referenced in Bill Anderson's 1970 country hit "Where Have All Our Heroes Gone"

    Songwriter Horatio Nicholls dies in London, England. The best known of his 600 compositions is "Among My Souvenirs," remade a dozen years later as a country hit by Marty Robbins
