    Guitarist Jim McReynolds is born in Coeburn, Virginia. With his brother, he forms Jim & Jesse, a bluegrass duo that begins recording in 1951, joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1964. They gain a Congressional Medal of the Arts in the 1990s

    Don Reno, of the bluegrass act Reno & Smiley, is born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The duo, which also features Red Smiley, collects a minor country hit in 1961 with "Don't Let Your Sweet Love Die"

    Ralph Stanley is born in Stratton, Virginia. His duo The Stanley Brothers is one of the pioneering acts in bluegrass, and his later band, the Clinch Mountain Boys, graduates Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley. Stanley earns a Grammy for "O Death," from the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack
