    Vito Pellettieri dies in Nashville after suffering a stroke. A longtime stage manager of the Grand Ole Opry, he helped George D. Hay develop the radio show's format after his appointment in 1934. During his tenure, Pellettieri also co-wrote Roy Acuff's hit "Unloved And Unclaimed"

    Jack Stapp dies in Nashville. A longtime program director for WSM Radio, where he worked with the Grand Ole Opry, he also co-wrote "Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy" and co-founded Tree Music Publishing, one of Music City's first publishers. He joins the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989

    Record producer and Capitol executive Lee Gillette dies after a fall at his home in California. He produced hits for Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jimmy Wakely, Leon Payne and Hank Thompson while overseeing the label's country releases from 1944-1950

    Booking agent Grover "Shorty" Lavender dies. He worked with such acts as The Statler Brothers, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, but only after playing fiddle on hits by Marty Robbins and Ray Price, including "Heartaches By The Number"

    Manager Bob Neal dies at Park View Medical Center in Nashville. A disc jockey and booking agent, he served as a personal manager for Elvis Presley before Colonel Tom Parker signed the singer. Neal also worked with Sonny James, Johnny Cash, Johnny Rodriguez and Barbara Mandrell

    Pioneering country executive Polk Brockman dies at Florida Hospital in Orlando. Working in Atlanta, he aided Ralph Peer in recording Fiddlin' John Carson's first session in 1924, making him one of the genre's earliest record producers

    "Renfro Valley Barn Dance" founder John Lair dies at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. The show, established in 1937, spent 20 years on radio stations WLW, in Cincinnati, followed by WHAS, in Louisville
