    Joe Bonsall is born in Philadelphia. In 1973, the ex-gang member becomes a tenor singer in the gospel quartet The Oak Ridge Boys, who soon shift into country music, using him as a lead voice on such hits as "Elvira," "Bobbie Sue" and "Love Song." The Oaks join the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015

    Southern-rock vocalist Doug Gray is born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He becomes a member of The Marshall Tucker Band, who earn a country Grammy nomination in 1977 for their single "Long Hard Ride"

    Buddy Alan is born in Tempe, Arizona. The son of Buck Owens and Bonnie Owens, he joins Buck on a Top 10 duet in 1968, "Let The World Keep On A-Turnin'," and later goes into country radio programming

    Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban record "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for the movie "Neptune's Daughter." The following year, Homer & Jethro record a country parody of the song with June Carter

    Stevie Nicks is born in Phoenix, Arizona. She joins the pop group Fleetwood Mac, whose self-titled 1975 album includes her composition "Landslide." The song becomes a country hit for The Dixie Chicks in 2002

    Merle Travis receives a guitar he had asked Paul Bigsby to custom-make on his behalf. Featuring Travis' name in mother of pearl along the base of the pick guard, it becomes his trademark instrument, often referred to as "the Bigsby"
