    Gene Autry has his first starring movie role in the sci-fi western "The Phantom Empire." With Smiley Burnette co-starring, Autry finds a lost race equipped with laser guns living beneath his ranch. He sings "That Silver-Haired Daddy Of Mine"

    Marshall Jones performs a show in Akron, which is caught by Bradley Kincaid. In short order, Kincaid brings Jones to Boston to perform on radio station WBZ, where he's renamed "Grandpa" Jones

    Steel guitarist Norm Hamlet is born in Woodside, California. As a member of Merle Haggard's band, The Strangers, Hamlet plays on "Ramblin' Fever," "Big City" and "If We Make It Through December." He also teaches Barbara Mandrell to play steel
