    John Carson, at age 11, brings a fiddle to a political rally in Copperhill, Tennessee. As a diversion from speeches, the boy is asked to play "The Little Old Log Cabin In The Lane." He is nicknamed Fiddlin' John Carson, and becomes a country pioneer

    Charles Giteau shoots president James Garfield in a Baltimore train station, leading to the commander in chief's death 80 days later. The incident inspires the Kelly Harrell song "Charles Giteau," included on the album "Anthology Of American Folk Music"

    Colonel Teddy Roosevelt leads the Rough Riders as they capture San Juan Hill near Santiago, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War. The battle is referenced in The Henningsens' 2013 country hit "American Beautiful"

    Richard Nixon is born in Yorba Linda, California. As president, he has Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard play the White House and presents Elvis Presley a federal agent badge. He also plays piano at the opening of the Grand Ole Opry House
    Jun 10, 1914
    Emmett Miller graduates from elementary school in Macon, Georgia. It represents the end of his education, as he persuades his parents to allow him to begin working. Miller goes on to influence Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams
    Jun 21, 1915
    Georgia's governor commutes Leo Frank's sentence from the death penalty to life in prison. Frank had been sentenced for a murder that led Fiddlin' John Carson to write "Little Mary Phagan." Carson joins protests at the governor's mansion in Atlanta

    Fiddler Henry Gilliland performs at the inauguration of Oklahoma governor John Walton, a massive outdoor barbecue in Oklahoma City
