Guitarist Burt Hutcherson dies from pneumonia in Nashville. He was a member of The Gully Jumpers, a stringband that worked the Grand Ole Opry from 1927 until the 1970s, and became the first act contracted by Victor Records to hold a recording session in Nashville

Bandleader Ben Selvin dies of a heart attack on New York's Long Island. A pioneering recording artist, he snapped up a #1 pop single in 1927 with "Blue Skies," a song readapted for country music by Willie Nelson in 1978
