    Ralph Stanley dies at his home in Sandy Ridge, Virginia, after battling skin cancer. As a member of The Stanley Brothers, he had a hand in such bluegrass classics as "Rank Stranger," "Angel Band" and "How Far To Little Rock." As a solo act, he earned a Grammy for "O Death," from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

    Bonnie Brown, of The Browns, dies after a battle with lung cancer at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. The group applied traditional-pop harmonies to country songs in the 1950s and '60s, led by "The Three Bells." The Browns joined the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015

    Songwriter/producer Gary S. Paxton dies in Branson, Missouri. The producer of Bobby "Boris" Pickett's pop novelty "Monster Mash," Paxton produced Vern Gosdin in the 1970s; played on singles by Stoney Edwards and Waylon Jennings; and wrote Roy Clark's "Honeymoon Feelin'" and Don Gibson's "Woman (Sensuous Woman)"
