    Ernest Stoneman writes to Thomas Edison in an effort to expand his recording presence. He subsequently records for both Edison Records and Okeh, which has already issued a number of his performances

    Jimmie Rodgers wires fiddler Clayton McMichen from Gadsden, Alabama, asking the former Skillet Licker to record with him. McMichen obliges, injecting morphine into Rodgers' veins during the sessions to quell the pain of tuberculosis

    William Borrett, manager of Halifax radio station CHNS, writes Hank Snow's first rejection letter, declining to put The Singing Ranger on the air: "Unless a sponsor was to ask for you, we could not do anything for you"

    Songwriter Bob Fletcher mails his original lyrics and melody for "Don't Fence Me In" to Cole Porter, who re-writes the melody and changes the lyrics. The song becomes a country hit for Gene Autry more than 10 years later

    Six weeks after songwriter Bob Fletcher sent his original version of "Don't Fence Me In" to Cole Porter, Porter mails an altered version of the tune back to Fletcher for his approval. It becomes a country hit 10 years later for Gene Autry

    Hank Snow writes a letter to RCA Records in Montreal, asking to record for the label. RCA's response is intended to discourage him, but leaves the door slightly open: "Unless you have original numbers it is very unlikely that we would be interested"

    Bob Wills sends a letter to piano player Al Stricklin, of The Hi Flyers, offering him $30 weekly to become a member of The Texas Playboys. Stricklin is in the studio with Wills the following month

    Following the departure of Dobro player Cousin Jody, Roy Acuff sends a telegram to Knoxville, enlisting Bashful Brother Oswald to take the role. Acuff also summons comedian Jake Tindell and guitarist Lonnie Wilson to join his Smoky Mountain Boys

    Amid signs that Europe is about to break out in a major war, Republic Pictures wires Gene Autry to return immediately to the U.S. The cowboy will, in fact, remain in England; he's in Liverpool when Germany invades Poland one week later

    Woody Guthrie writes the first of several erotic letters to Mary Ruth Crissman, the sister of a former duet partner, one of them supplemented with newspaper accounts of murders. She later files charges against him for mailing obscene materials
